Are Things Worse
Do you have a sense that things are getting worse?
They are.
We DO have to work harder to stay in the same place. The price of housing, gas, water, meat, dairy, and fish are all going up. There may be dips along the way but the overall direction is clear. The price of all these goods is going up because we are using up our natural resources faster than they are replenished.
The world is more toxic than it has ever been. Children feel it first because their bodies are still forming and pound for pound they take in more chemicals than adults.
. Childhood asthma is up 2.5x since 1980; in some urban populations 40% of children have asthma.
. Childhood cancer rates rose 20% from 1975 to 1995
. More than 100,000 synthetic chemicals have been developed since WWII.
These chemicals don't degrade like biologically based chemicals and we don't know the long term effects of living inside this chemical cocktail. P.S. Do you trust the government and agribusiness to determine the safe amount of poison to put on your food so you can see good looking cheap food at the grocery store?
Global warming is a serious threat to all life on this planet. The species extinction rate is currently 100 times greater than normal. Though humans as a species will not go extinct, our numbers will most likely be radically reduced by the effects of global warming. Agriculture requires predictable climate; Global warming creates dryer land inland and torrential rains on the coasts. We're running out of water where we need it most - in the farming regions. For example, 20% of all US crops are irrigated from the Ogallala aquifer in the central plain states. Farmers are having to dig deeper and deeper wells to chase the water that is being pulled out much faster than natural recharge. We have about 10-20 years before the water runs out and these productive fields return to the arid plains they were before irrigation. Some places like Klamath country are already dealing with scarcity issues and have been for years.
Life will definitely be harder for your children and grandchildren. There will be massive famines and resource wars. It's not yet time to circle the wagons, but it is time to meet your neighbors and learn together how to become more self-reliant. The quicker we start, the better things will be. It's a bit scary, but it's also going to be fun. There's nothing like working together on a meaningful project to bring true self-worth and well-being.
It starts with a conversation.

The world is more toxic than it was a generation ago.
We are running out of water.
Global warming does threaten our food system. more…
What to say to Skeptics
Ever wonder what to say to people that don't believe global warming is real? What do you say to people who say we can't afford to be sustainable? more…
